2026 George E. O’Connell Award Recipient:
DJ O’Connor
David “DJ” O’Connor was born and raised in Holyoke and is a 1979 graduate of Holyoke High School. Following high school, he attended the University of Akron and spent time living in Ohio before moving to Florida. In 1983, DJ returned home to Holyoke to begin working alongside his father at Mass. Surgical Supply, LLC. He is now the owner of the company, where he has proudly worked for 42 years. Deeply proud of his Holyoke roots, DJ is equally proud to be a long-standing Holyoke business owner.
DJ remains actively engaged in the local business community through his volunteer service with the Holyoke Chamber of Commerce, the Parking Advisory Committee, and the Recycling Advisory Committee. DJ has been a dedicated member of the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade Committee since 1983. Over the years, he has served on numerous committees, including the Colleen Contest, Grand Marshal’s Reception, and Music Committees. He has also held key leadership roles as Sergeant-at-Arms and Master of Ceremonies for the John F. Kennedy Memorial Wreath Laying Ceremony. He also plays a vital role in the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Road Race, helping ensure that hundreds of volunteers are properly staffed and positioned along the course.
In addition, DJ plays a key role in ensuring the Parade’s program books are sold along the route and delivered to area businesses each year. His parade legacy includes serving as Parade President in 2006 and receiving the Rohan Award in 1999. This year, DJ is honored as the recipient of the O’Connell Award.
DJ and his wife, Alice, reside in Easthampton, where they raised their three daughters, Kara, Bridget, and Kelly. Beyond his involvement with the Parade Committee and the Holyoke business community, DJ is a proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Holyoke Elks. In his free time, he enjoys skiing, golfing, boating, fishing at the Quabbin Reservoir, and traveling.
