St. Patrick’s Committee of Holyoke Introduces “Sensory Street” for 2026 Parade
The St. Patrick’s Committee of Holyoke is excited to introduce “Sensory Street,” a designated sensory‑friendly viewing area for the 2026 Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade. Sponsored by Magic for Maddie and the Miracle League of Western Massachusetts — whose guidance helped thoughtfully shape this effort and who is also the Parade’s 2026 Citizenship Award recipient — this initiative reflects the Committee’s ongoing commitment to creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for all spectators.
What is Sensory Street and why offer it?
Sensory-friendly spaces are designed to reduce loud noises, flashing lights, and intense sensory input that can be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities, as well as for those who prefer a calmer environment. By offering a quieter, lower-stimulus option, the Committee aims to make it easier for more community members to comfortably attend and enjoy this beloved tradition.
“The Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade has always been about bringing our entire community together,” said Jim Wildman, Parade President. “With the introduction of Sensory Street, we are taking an important step toward ensuring every family can experience the joy and pride of Parade Day in a way that best meets their needs. We are grateful for the generous support of Magic for Maddie and the Miracle League of Western Massachusetts, and for the Miracle League’s thoughtful guidance in shaping this sensory‑friendly area.”
Where and how it works
Once parade participants — including marching bands, fire and police units, and community organizations — reach Appleton Street, a wind-down zone will begin at Walnut Street. The full two-block Sensory Street zone will take effect from Elm Street through Maple Street.
Within this area:
No emergency lights or flashing lights
No sirens or amplified alarms
Bands: strings only (no percussion or brass instruments)
General reduction of loud or sudden sounds (no car horns or revving engines)
This is a limited, temporary section of the route and does not affect the remainder of the parade. The sensory-friendly area will be clearly marked with signage and featured on the official parade map in advance so families, caregivers, and spectators can plan ahead. Additional parade security and section monitors will be present to help maintain the sensory-friendly environment. The parade returns to the traditional experience at High Street.
Open to everyone
Sensory Street is open to all spectators — no reservations or special passes are required. It simply offers a lower-stimulus option while maintaining the celebratory spirit of the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade.
The Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade is a celebration for everyone. The Committee is deeply grateful to Magic for Maddie for sponsoring Sensory Street and to the Miracle League of Western Massachusetts for helping thoughtfully shape the experience.
“Magic for Maddie is honored to sponsor Sensory Street and support an initiative that helps more families feel comfortable and included on parade day,” said Nora Schmidt, Founder and Maddie’s Mom. “Creating moments of joy that every child can experience is at the heart of our mission, and we’re proud to partner with the Committee on this meaningful addition.”
“As this year’s Citizenship Award recipient, we are proud to help curate Sensory Street and expand accessibility at one of the region’s most cherished events,” said Kerry Parsons, member of the Board of Directors. “Thoughtful accommodations like this make a real difference for individuals with sensory sensitivities and their families. Inclusion is the root of what the Miracle League does and Sensory Street ties in perfectly with that. We look forward to marching in the parade — and to doing so with even bigger smiles as we pass through this special and historic section.”
The Committee will provide advance guidance and on-route reminders to participating units to ensure awareness and cooperation. The success of Sensory Street depends on the continued partnership of parade participants, first responders, volunteers, and spectators.
